alcohol and food abuse

So I was scrolling through my google reader and stumbled across this posting about a sermon recently preached by Perry Nobel at NewSpring Church in SC. I found it very interesting. One of Perry’s points was that there are more people who suffer from food gluttony than alcoholism. And that we shouldn’t look down on those who drink anymore than we do on people who are overweight. The first thing I did was grab the tires around my mid section. All this time I’ve been feeling so good I haven’t had a drink in over 5 years, yet what was my excuse or explanation for my waistline? While I was thinking about this, the funnier side in me came out. Here’s my explanation for the imbalance of prejudice I have towards drinking and overeating.
I’ve never eaten an entire chocolate cake and woken up next to someone I didn’t know.
I’ve never eaten a box of donuts and drove my truck onto my neighbors yard thinking I parked it perfectly fine in my own.
I’ve never had too many cheesy potato bites and almost get myself and my date beaten up at a bar in Pioneer Square.
So, you see, I think there will always be a little bit of hypocrisy on the part of those of us who try and drown our problems in a carton of ice cream over a bottle of booze. I do find it very interesting though that after 13 years of drinking, God gave me the grace to never touch it again, yet I’m in total denial and it would appear completely incapable of improving my physical health when it comes to diet and exercise. On a serious note I think this is something that’s going to be on my mind for awhile…

great post natalie… great points you made about the difference between a bad night of eating and that of drinking (and that is much as I am putting online from my point of view)
Just found your blog, great stuff! Excited to add it to my RSS and read some new stuff!
